PURE PARADISE
PURE PARADISE
SHORT ISLAND HISTORY OF DESROCHES
The island of DESROCHES got its name from the Chevalier Desroches
who sailed past the island hundreds of years ago with a French Expedition from the island of Mauritius, then known as ?L?le De France?.
One wonders of course whether in 1502 Vasco Da Gama, the famous Portuguese Admiral, passed by Desroches whilst sailing through the Indian Ocean islands. He probably did have a look at this little spot in the middle of nowhere but decided that it did not look promising enough to hoist the flag of his king on this island.
Once annexed to ?Isle De France,? Desroches ownership changed a couple of times as the result of a few half-heartedly fought battles over the Seychelles Islands by the British and the French. In 1903, however, when the Seychelles ceased to be dependent on Mauritius, Desroches and the other coralline islands fell under the British jurisdiction. The British Indian Ocean Territory was founded in 1968, which separated Desroches, and some other islands in the Indian Ocean form the Seychelles main group.
In 1976 when the Seychelles became Independent from colonial rule, Desroches became part of the Republic of Seychelles, as we know it today.
Like other coralline islands between Seychelles and Madagascar, Desroches went through various stages of settlement. The earliest beginnings date back about 150 years. The island was entirely covered by a dense forest of casuarinas trees, also known as ?folios? or ?cedars?, protected from the southeast trade winds, and the short strong gusts during the northwest monsoon by a line of thick bushes.
Settlers having arrived on the island by passing boats, started to grow crops in a bid to make the island their home. Maize, cotton and coconuts were grown. Fish were dried and turtles, lobsters, crayfish, crabs and octopus were caught for meals. Water had to be stored, but a good downpour filled tanks and barrels in no time at all. At that time, people settled permanently on Desroches, and until approximately fifteen years ago one could still find settlers here who had not been off the island for many years.
Geography and Topography
Desroches Island lies at 5.42 degrees South of its Equator and 53. 40? degrees East and is the Eastern island in the Amirantes group. It is 6 KM long and 1.5 KM wide at the widest point. It stretches in a southwest-northeast direction and is 3 meters maximum above sea level. Desroches covers an area of 402 hectares encircled by beach of 14 kms of white sand. The atoll itself is of a circular shape, 10 nautical miles in diameter. Its reefs bear shallows of up to 2 meters and is surrounded by a lagoon of up to 20 meters deep. The outer edges of the reef drop vertically into the deep, blue Indian Ocean - anglers and divers dreams.............
The low altitude of the island explains the annual rainfall (300-350mm) that is approximately a quarter of that of the more northerly island.
Centuries of Winds and tides have shaped the island adding curves here and there, but overall the island remains untouched. Although the airstrip (1.45 kms) you landed on was made of concrete and your luggage was taken to your room by a motorized vehicle, the birds are still singing as they did a hundred years ago. The sea is still clean and full of life and a clean refreshing breeze will still cool you down after a walk through our beautiful and untouched wildlife.
On Desroches you will find a small village known as the ?settlement? which still offers the charm of the ?good old days?. It is situated about thirty minutes walk from the hotel. In contrary to ?old times? the people working there do not stay on the island full time. They come from Seychelles main islands and work on yearly contracts.
The farm Manager, formerly the ?Administrator? of the island is ?king? of the island, and with modern communications and transport from Mah, some of his ancient roles are now non-existent. The Island Development Corporation who administers the island now manages the Island. The Island Manager now concentrates on the production of fish, pork, chicken, beef and lamb, which is exported to Mahe. He also produces the firewood and copra that you may see stacked up around the island.
COPRA
Copra is the dried interior of the coconut. Farm workers in the plantation collect the coconuts, de-husk the nuts (keeping the milk for animal food) and
transport them to the copra dryer. The husks are left on the ground and in good time turn to compost. The copra dryer is a large building with thick
walls, at the center of which there is a big steel pipe. At one end of this pipe a fire is made with the empty coconut shells that creates an intense heat,
which is needed to dry the interior of the coconuts. The nut halves are then left in this building for two days, after which the interior falls out of the hard
casing and is collected, stacked into bags and sent to Mah for further refining.
Making copra is a Seychelles specialty, and during your stay on Desroches you are sure to meet a friendly islander in the plantation de-husking his daily quota of coconuts.
ACCESS
By air direct from Mah (45 mins to 1 hour flight time depending on the type of aircraft) 5 times a week (Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday). Flights depart from Mah at 1345 hrs each day
ACCOMODATION
Desroches Island Resort was opened in March 1988. A combination of luxury and simplicity, it consists of twenty air-conditioned junior suites of 68 square meters. All suites are sea facing stretching the length of a perfect white sand beach and are connected to the restaurant/bar by shaded walkways. Each junior suite has a ?King size? bed, mosquito net, and a ceiling fan in the lounge, mini bar and room safe. The bathroom offers, bath and shower, double hand basins, bidet, hair dryer, bath robes and locally made toiletries (shampoo, hair conditioner, soap, body lotion etc.) and laundry service is available.
The suites are furnished with top quality Takamaka wood with pastel colors: blue, yellow, green and with paint pictures. The lounge leads onto a private terrace with its sun lounges a few meters from the tropical garden and sea. It offers a turn down service in the room while guests are having dinner.
Everything has been done to make your stay on Desroches Island as comfortable as possible. We make our own water from a capable desalination plant and our electricity comes from powerful diesel generators. We are in contact with the rest of the world through satellite-relayed telephone, facsimile and e-mail.
Wide long, deserted beaches await you on Desroches as well as walks through the island.
HOTEL AMENITIES
Two restaurants are available, the main open-air restaurant and the feet-in-a-sand beach restaurant made up of 11 kiosk (popular for it?s informal
atmosphere). Both specialize in cuisine meticulously prepared and elaborated with fresh products from the island?s plantation, spice garden and
the catch of the day. Our highly flexible menu options make provision for any special health dietary or religious requirements.
The bar located in the heart of the hotel is the right place to meet all the guests and speak about the catch or the dive of the day ?and try one of the cocktails prepared by Gervais our head barman, like? The Desroches Ocean?.
Desroches Island Resort, a tradition of personal service.

Plenty.... We must be the best-equipped water sports center in the Seychelles.
Our modern, well-maintained equipment ranges from complete diving kits to
fishing boats with superb tackle to mini laser sails, windsurfers, canoes, and pedallos. All this comes hand in hand with expert tuition and handling from our capable water sports staff.
Wide, long, lonely beaches await you on Desroches as well as walks through the island where you might discover plants, flowers, sea and land birds that you may have never seen before. You may even come across the grey francolin - a bird that is endemic to Desroches Island.
FREE NON-MOTORISED WATER SPORTS FACILITIES
Non-motorized water sports (Canoes, pedallos, laser mini-sails, windsurfing, snorkeling), Swimming pool,
Indoor games: Scrabble, chess, trivial pursuit, ludo, cards?library and TV &Video rooms, floodlight tennis court, mini golf practice. French bowls (petanque), bicycles and bottom line fishing.
In planning a trip around the island on foot, please bear in mind the tides and consult the Resort Managers about times to ensure that you are not marooned somewhere..............
PAYING ACTIVITIES
Desroches Island is reputed for its marine life. The five stars P.A.D.I certified diving center (with diving boats) has 14 classified dive sites, among which is the famous?Desroches Drop?? said to be the best diving in the Seychelles, if not the Indian ocean. Round trip around the islands and sunset cruise or snorkeling trip at the Aquarium is a must.
Big game fishing
The resort is well positioned for excellent deep big game fishing. The fully equipped fishing center holds a 1996 record with the catch of a ?Blue Marlin Makaira Indica of 610lbs?. There is also an ultra modern boat? Cookie-Two? Riviera of 36 feet equipped with Penn International rods and reels (2x315 HP engines) including soft drinks and mineral water. Fly-fishing and excursions can be organized to the nearby islands?D?Arros or Poivre Islands? or from the seashore.
Please note that the PRO-DIVING center and BOAT TRIPS organized by our resort depends on the sea, weather and tide conditions.
Finally, as paradise is without a flaw - some words of caution. If you do not know the species of plant, fish or animal life you may encounter during your explorations over and under water - DO NOT TOUCH IT - LOOK ONLY.
There are some species of tropical flora and fauna, which may be harmful to man. A precaution against stings and other minor injuries is also to wear shoes whilst walking on the reef.
We trust that you will enjoy your stay with us. The standard of the hotel is in our hands and we will ensure that it is run to the best of our ability at all times. The standard of the island, however, lies also in yours. Please do not remove anything from the land or sea be it dead or alive, leaving for others exactly what you found.
GUIDE TO MAP
Welcome to your very own tour of DESROCHES ISLAND. The island has very many interesting points and we are sure that you will enjoy visiting them. Listed below are the areas you will enjoy visiting them. Listed below
are the areas you will come to in numerical order as they are found on the map.
Happy Touring.........
1. Should you carry on along the airstrip to the furthest point will see the
DESALINATION PLANT. All the water used on the island is ground seawater that has been passed through an elaborate process in this machine that has rendered it fit for human consumption. Thus there are no water restrictions on the island and the water is very safe to drink.
2. The Old Saw Mill
Desroches has a couple of hardwood trees as well as the many coconut
and cedar trees. This mill used to be used for cutting the wood up to make
firewood, which was then exported to Mah. Firewood is still being made
on the island, but the mill is not in use any longer.
3. Nature Trail
This route that takes back to the end of the airstrip was selected to be
a ?Nature Trail? because of its beauty. Certain trees will be marked in the
near future with their names to enable you to recognize them as you travels.
4. Bombe-Bay
A beautiful bay for both sunbathing and snorkeling. It also boasts one of the natural passes in the reef where boats and ships can pass through
without danger.
5. Livestock
The little road that turns off to your right just before you reach the
Plantation takes you past the islands cold store and slaughterhouse as
well as the livestock pens and sties. Desroches is what they call the ?Sheep Project.? Therefore the bulk of animals found here are sheep. Once they are ready for human consumption they are slaughtered here and exported to the main island for distribution. Other livestock kept on the islands for hotel consumption are pigs and a couple of cows and chickens.
6. The Old Cemetery
This peaceful place is the place of eternal rest for the early settlers on
Desroches who eventually died here.
7. ?The White House?
The original island Managers house. This old colonial style house was built in 1929 by the early settlers for the ?Administrator? of the island but not in use anymore.
8. The Calorifer
Otherwise known as the copra dryer. This is where the copra is made.
Nuts are collected from all over the island and are de-husked. They are
then brought to the dryer where they are split into two neat halves. The
halves are put into the dryer for 24 hours. Inside the dryer a fire of intense
heat dries out the flesh of the nut until it falls out of the hard casing.
After this process has been completed, the flesh is removed from the nuts
and is put into the adjacent dryer for another 24 hours to finish the drying
process. The copra, as the dried coconut is then called, is packed into
bags and sent to Mah for further refining. Desroches makes some of the
best quality copra in the Seychelles.
9. The Old Copra Mill
In the olden days, before the copra was sent to Mah for further refining
the cooked flesh was thrown into the old mill. A bull then had the task of
walking around and around the mill with a huge pestle attached to his
back which ground the nuts to produce coconut oil.
10.Weather Station
Here the maximum sunshine hours, wind speeds and rainfall figures were
collected on tape and recorded by the Seychelles Meteorological Office
and transmitted daily to Mah.
11.Therese Bay
Again, a beautiful, quiet beach for bathing.
12.Nature Trail 2
An enchanting trails whether by foot or bicycle. A feel of being
deep in tropical rain forest or somewhere in the Amazon. Definitely a must.
13.Woody Glen
Ideal place for a break in the journey.
14.Lighthouse
The solar-powered lighthouse is a landmark of Desroches as it has
guided many ships past the dangerous reef of Desroches.
You have now reached the end of the island. Swimming is possible everywhere but we would like to caution you once more not to touch anything that is not familiar. Please do not hesitate to enquire about anything, however the Hotel staff as well as the staff of the settlement will be pleased to assist you.

On the way out, the view of the entrance is simply breathtaking: deep blue, shaped like a half-moon, with sea-fans hanging over from its top and shoals of blue-striped snappers and squirrel fishes hanging out in front of it... a superb shot for your U/W camera!!

CANYON
Max 32 m. /ave. 14 m. - this is our instructor Roy?s special tip! By many divers rated as the best site around Desroches, another deep dive along swim-through tunnels, around boulders and inside long crevices - the extraordinary bottom features of this site make it a favourite spot for giant moray eels, octopuses, potato cods, yellow fin groupers, big-eye travellies and ocelot cods - another site you can?t miss if you like underwater photography!
THREE ROCKS
Max 35 m. /ave. 15 m. - this site features three medium-sized coral heads with soft and black corals, gorgonians and sea fans - among the fish species found here there are sea worms, lionfish, octopus, hump headed parrotfish, nurse and white-tip sharks, angelfish and various kinds of snapper.
